Concrete remains one of the most popular driveway materials for good reason: it’s durable, cost-effective, requires minimal maintenance, and offers a clean, professional appearance. When properly installed with appropriate reinforcement and joint placement, a concrete driveway in Charles County lasts 25-30 years.
We install both standard broom-finish concrete driveways and decorative options including exposed aggregate, stamped concrete, and integrally colored concrete.
What Makes a Quality Concrete Driveway
The visible concrete is only part of the equation. What’s underneath determines whether it lasts 5 years or 30.
Subgrade preparation. We strip topsoil and organic material, then compact the existing subgrade. Building on uncompacted soil leads to settling and cracking.
Base layer. Minimum 4 inches of compacted ¾” crushed stone. Some installers skip this — their driveways crack within 5 years.
Thickness. Minimum 4 inches for cars, 6 inches for trucks or RVs. We pour 5 inches as our standard for residential.
Reinforcement. #4 rebar on 18” centers or fiber mesh reinforcement in the concrete itself.
Concrete mix. 4,000 PSI mix with air entrainment for freeze-thaw resistance. Cheap pours use 3,000 PSI without air entrainment — they fail in Maryland winters.
Joint placement. Control joints every 10-12 feet. Without proper joints, the concrete will crack — and it won’t crack where you want it.
Curing. Wet curing or curing compound applied immediately after finishing. Concrete that dries too fast loses 20-30% of its potential strength.
Concrete Driveway Options
Standard Broom Finish — Light surface texture from a broom drag. Most common, most affordable. $8-$12 per sq ft.
Exposed Aggregate — Aggregate exposed after wash-off of surface paste. Decorative, slip-resistant. $10-$15 per sq ft.
Stamped Concrete — Patterns and textures stamped into wet concrete to mimic stone, brick, or slate. Decorative options unlimited. $12-$18 per sq ft. See our dedicated Stamped Concrete page.
Integrally Colored — Color mixed into the concrete (not surface-applied). Colors won’t wear off. Add $2-$4 per sq ft to base price.
