A fire pit transforms a patio from “outdoor floor” into “destination.” It extends your outdoor season into October and November in Maryland, gives the family something to gather around, and creates the kind of backyard moments that homes are really about.
We design and install custom fire features throughout Charles County: wood-burning fire pits, gas fire pits, gas fire tables, and full outdoor fireplaces.
Wood-Burning vs. Gas Fire Pits
Wood-burning pros:
- Authentic flame, smell, sound
- No gas line installation needed
- Lower upfront cost ($1,500-$3,500)
- Cook over flame possible
Wood-burning cons:
- Smoke (consider wind direction relative to home and neighbors)
- Ash management
- Wood storage
- Many HOAs restrict open flames
- Charles County burn restrictions during dry conditions
Gas pros:
- Push-button on/off
- Adjustable flame
- No smoke
- Safer (no embers)
- Allowed in most HOAs
- Burns clean
Gas cons:
- Higher upfront cost ($3,000-$8,000 including gas line)
- Requires gas line from house or propane tank
- No flame “experience” of wood
- Higher operating cost over time
Most Charles County homeowners we work with choose gas for the convenience and HOA compatibility.
Fire Pit Styles
Round paver fire pit — Most common. Built from interlocking fire pit kit blocks. 36-48” diameter. Coordinates with surrounding patio.
Square paver fire pit — Modern aesthetic. Often 36-42” square.
Natural stone fire pit — Custom-built from stacked stone. Higher cost, premium look.
Built-in fire pit — Recessed into patio surface. Sleek, contemporary.
Fire table — Lower-profile gas feature that doubles as a coffee table. Increasingly popular.
Outdoor fireplace — Full vertical stone fireplace with chimney. $8,000-$25,000+. Dramatic focal point.
Installation Considerations
Distance from structures. Most fire pits require 10+ feet from structures, overhangs, and combustibles. We site every fire pit to code.
Gas line installation. We coordinate with a licensed gas plumber for permanent gas line work. Propane tank options also available.
Air flow. Wood-burning pits need proper airflow for clean burning. We build vent slots into the lower courses.
Seating proximity. Fire pit benches should be 3-4 feet from the flame. Closer is too hot; farther feels disconnected.
Wind direction. We discuss prevailing winds during design to position fire pits where smoke (wood-burning) blows away from common seating areas.
