The pool deck is what your family actually walks on, sets chairs on, and lies on year after year. It’s also one of the most punished surfaces on your property — chlorinated water, sun, suntan oils, wet feet, and constant freeze-thaw cycles.
We install pool decks and pool coping throughout Charles County in pavers, stamped concrete, and natural stone. Whether you’re building a new pool or replacing a failing deck, we design for safety, durability, and aesthetic match to your home.
Pool Deck Material Options
Pavers — Best long-term choice. Non-slip texture, individual replacement if damaged, lifetime durability. $20-$30 per sq ft. Recommended for new pools and full deck replacements.
Stamped Concrete — Mid-range option. Looks like stone at lower cost. Needs sealing every 2-3 years. $12-$18 per sq ft.
Broom-finish Concrete — Cheapest. Basic, durable, but utilitarian appearance. $8-$12 per sq ft.
Travertine — Premium natural stone. Beautiful, naturally cool underfoot (lower heat absorption than concrete). $25-$50 per sq ft.
Bluestone — Premium natural stone. Classic Pennsylvania bluestone or thermal-finished. $25-$40 per sq ft.
Pool Coping
Pool coping is the edge piece around the pool itself — what you grab when climbing out, what the deck transitions to. It’s safety-critical and must be installed correctly.
Bullnose coping — Rounded edge, most common, most comfortable for hands.
Square-edge coping — Modern aesthetic, slightly less hand-friendly.
Cantilevered coping — Overhangs the pool edge slightly, premium look.
Material match — Coping typically matches deck material (pavers with paver coping, stone with stone coping).
Pool-Specific Considerations
Slope. Pool decks must slope AWAY from the pool to prevent splash water from re-entering. Minimum 1% slope (¼” per foot).
Expansion joints. Pool decks need proper expansion joints. Concrete decks especially are prone to cracking from pool shell movement and freeze-thaw.
Slip resistance. Wet pool decks are slippery. Pavers and textured stone are inherently safer than smooth concrete.
Chlorine resistance. Pavers and natural stone resist chlorine well. Stamped concrete sealers degrade faster around pools.
Heat reflection. Lighter colors reflect more heat. Dark pool decks can become uncomfortable to walk on barefoot in summer.
Replacement vs. Resurfacing
Resurfacing. If your existing deck is structurally sound but worn (faded color, minor cracks), we can sometimes overlay with thin pavers or apply decorative concrete overlays. $8-$15 per sq ft.
Full replacement. If your deck has significant cracking, settling, or drainage problems, full removal and replacement is the right approach. $15-$30 per sq ft including demolition.
